Long (websites, articles and partner churches)

Christian Tenguan is a missionary in Tokyo, originally from Hawaii. Before moving to Japan, he was a photographer and creative director for musicians across Hawaii and the mainland US, including Thunderstorm Artis, a finalist on NBC's The Voice; Meleana Brown, who sang with John Legend on ABC's Duets; and Korean hip-hop star Dok2. Depending on the artist, his work ranged from photo shoots to artist identity, brand voice and business strategy. His photography has been viewed more than 9 million times and used by outlets including Forbes Russia and Der Tagesspiegel.

From 2017 to 2022, Christian led mission teams from Hawaii to Japan. There he saw both the faithfulness of Japan's churches and a critical need: nearly half of Japan's pastors were already over 70, and too few young leaders were ready to carry the Gospel forward. After six years of saying no, he said yes to God's call and moved to Tokyo.

Christian serves with New Hope Tokyo, where he is producer and service director for its weekly young adults ministry, Collective. He also serves with New Hope Japan Youth and UNITE, a monthly gathering of more than 250 young people he helped launch. He served as creative director for UNITE Conference 2026, which drew around 800 young people through a typhoon. His goal is to disciple 100 leaders who will each go on to raise 100 more.

  • Evan Khay: Co-wrote an original song for a Netflix film

  • Rachel Morley: Songwriter signed with Centricity Music

  • Dok2: Korean hip-hop star; signed with Tyga's Last Kings Records

  • Tiare: Rising Hawaii artist

Emcee introduction

To be read aloud before Christian speaks (about 30 seconds):

Our next speaker grew up in Hawaii and spent years as a photographer and creative director for musicians, including Thunderstorm Artis from The Voice. For six years, he said no to moving to Japan. Then God changed his answer. Today he serves as a missionary in Tokyo, where he helped launch UNITE, a monthly gathering of more than 250 young people, and is raising the next generation of leaders for Japan's church. Please welcome Christian Tenguan.

Why Japan, why now

  • About 1% of Japan is Christian. The government counted 1,246,742 Christians at the end of 2023, out of about 124 million people. (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Religious Yearbook 2024)

  • Nearly half of Japan's pastors were over 70 as of 2017. (OMF, 2025)

  • 3,000 to 5,000 churches have no pastor or a pastor who needs to retire, while Bible colleges produce about 120 new pastors a year. (OMF, 2025)

  • More than 100 churches close each year. (OMF, 2025)

  • At least 70% of churches have fewer than 30 people attending. (Operation World)

  • The 2030 problem: some predict half of Japan's churches will be without a pastor by 2030. (AsiaLink, 2023)

The ministry

Christian's work falls into five connected areas:

  • Evangelism: reaching young adults with the Gospel through creative outreach

  • Discipleship: walking with young believers as they grow in faith and learn to lead others

  • Community: creating belonging through gatherings, meals, fellowship and an open ministry home

  • Creativity: using media, worship and storytelling to reach Gen Z in Japan

  • Partnership: helping churches in Japan and around the world work together

Leadership model: leaders are discovered, developed, and deployed.

Story highlights

  • The prayer that changed his no to yes. For six years he said no to moving to Japan. Then he prayed for three signs he couldn't deny, and all three came within one week, including news that his great-grandfather had prayed for their family to reach Japan.

  • 800 through a typhoon. UNITE Conference 2026 sold out, then a typhoon closed 15 train lines. Around 800 young people still came.

  • When love speaks across languages. At youth camp, with little shared language, a boy in Christian's cabin decided to follow Jesus on the final day.

  • "Christian desu." In Japanese, kurisuchan means both "Christian" and "a Christian," so visitors often answer his introduction with "Oh, I'm not." It has become a natural conversation starter.

  • A name that means "heaven's prayer." Tenguan comes from an Okinawan family name, 天願 (Tengan). Ten means heaven, and gan comes from negau, to pray or wish, so it can be read as "heaven's prayer." Fitting for someone who moved to Japan after praying for an answer, and learned he was the answer to a prayer his great-grandfather had prayed years before.

  • Handing it off. After leading the youth camp media team, he passed leadership to the next generation, who made it their own.

In his words

"I don't see only a crisis. I also see a historic opportunity."

"I don't want to create people who depend on me. I want to help raise leaders who multiply."

"Ministry is not about having a flawless presentation. It is about showing up faithfully, loving people well, and trusting God with what we cannot do ourselves."

"God wastes nothing."
